It's the question we get asked on almost every heating and cooling quote: should we go with split systems or a ducted setup? There's no one right answer - but there is a right answer for your home. Here's how we think it through with customers.
When split systems make sense
A split system heats or cools one zone - a living area, a bedroom, an office. They're the value pick, and often the smarter one:
- Lower up-front cost per unit, and installation is usually a single day
- Heat or cool only the rooms you're using - cheaper to run day to day
- Perfect for smaller homes, extensions and open-plan living areas
- VEU rebates apply when replacing an old gas heater
When ducted is worth it
Ducted reverse-cycle runs from a central unit through ceiling or floor vents in every room. It costs more up front, but it does things splits can't:
- Whole-home comfort from a single system, with zoning to shut off unused areas
- No wall units in sight - just discreet vents in each room
- One system to service rather than several
- Adds real value when replacing tired gas ducted - and rebates can apply
What we look at on a quote
Sizing is where most heating and cooling installs go wrong - an undersized unit works flat out and dies young, an oversized one short-cycles and wastes power. On a free onsite inspection we look at room sizes, insulation, window orientation and your switchboard capacity, then size the system to the job.
Our advice honestly depends on the house: plenty of Myrtleford and Bright homes are best served by two well-placed splits, while larger family homes around Wangaratta and Albury-Wodonga often justify ducted. Get us out for a look and we'll tell you straight.
